Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to arrive to India. Born in Sines ( Alentejo ), his voyage took 2 years, from Lisbon to India, Calicut on 20 May 1498. Belém civil parish has the Monastery of Jerónimos where you will find the tomb of Vasco da Gama, besides Luís de Camões ( Most famous Portuguese Poet which wrote “The Lusiads”).
